カタカナとは？ / What is Katakana?

カタカナは、日本語で使われる３つの文字の一つです。
主に外来語（外国語から来た言葉）、音や動物の鳴き声、会社名、強調など、特別な意味を表すときに使われます。

Katakana is one of the three writing systems used in Japanese.
It is mainly used for foreign words (loanwords), sounds and animal cries, company names, and for emphasis or special meanings.

カタカナの起源 / The Origin of Katakana

カタカナは、ひらがなと同じく漢字から生まれました。
9世紀ごろ、仏教のお坊さんたちが経典を読むときに、漢字の一部を使ってメモを書くために作られました。
例えば、「ア」は「阿」という漢字の一部から、「カ」は「加」という漢字の一部から作られています。

Katakana also originated from kanji, just like hiragana.
Around the 9th century, Buddhist monks created katakana to write notes while reading Chinese Buddhist scriptures.
For example, “ア” comes from part of the kanji “阿”, and “カ” comes from part of the kanji “加”.

なぜカタカナが必要だった？ / Why Was Katakana Needed?

当時の日本人は、難しい漢字の文章を読む必要がありました。
そこで、お坊さんたちは漢字の一部を切り取った「カタカナ」を使い、読みやすくする工夫をしました。
最初は漢文のルビや補助記号として使われていましたが、しだいに独立した文字として発展していきました。

たとえば、コンピュータ（computer）やコーヒー（coffee）のような外来語、ピカピカやワンワンのような擬音語、企業名（トヨタ、ソニー）などが代表的です。
また、教科書や広告などで強調したい言葉もカタカナで書かれることがあります。

Today, katakana is used in many situations.
For example, foreign loanwords like コンピュータ (computer) or コーヒー (coffee), onomatopoeia like ピカピカ or ワンワン, and company names (Toyota, Sony) are all written in katakana.
Sometimes, words are also written in katakana in textbooks or advertisements for emphasis.

カタカナは形がシンプルで、直線が多いのが特徴です。
最初は読みづらいと感じるかもしれませんが、外来語や看板など、日常の中でカタカナに触れるチャンスはたくさんあります。
毎日少しずつ練習し、好きなカタカナ語を集めてみましょう。覚えるコツは「よく見る」「書く」「声に出す」ことです。
